FEELING THE HEAT OF COMPETITION - Daniel and Alex OConnell travelled to Slough to take part in The Cippenham TTC Youth Summer Festival of Table Tennis on 18th June where they played in temperatures of 30 degrees! Young players from as far afield as Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, and Essex took part in an excellent competition. Play started at 9am and ended at 7pm with the long hours, early start, and high temperature taking its toll. Daniel got to semis and quarters of under 12 and under 13, Alex got through the group in the under 12s and to the quarters in the under 11 consolation event. Alex also won a Special Award (see Roll of Honour page), but the heat made him ill in the toilets. The heat and stress of spectating was felt by their Grandfather (Alan), who was glad to retire to the Longbarn public house, where he rehydrated himself with the help of "John Smith".
ALEXANDER OCONNELL - Has recieved a letter of congratulations from The House of Commons! Blaenau Gwent MP Peter Law, has put pen to paper, regarding Alex's success at the Welsh Primary Schools, where he defended the title with Lewis Williams. His coach and grandfather Alan OConnell (labour party member), has refused to comment. Incidentally there is a table tennis table in the House of Commons, Norman Lamont being a very good player.
PING PONG THE MOVIE! - Coach Neil OConnell has a DVD of the fantastic new table tennis film "PING PONG". Well worth borrowing, awarded 5 stars by Daniel OConnell, 4 stars by Alex OConnell, Jonathan Ross (Film 2005 BBC TV) awarded it 5 stars and called it "Rocky with Table Tennis". Please note that it has a 12 rating (Dragons), and that you need a DVD player (Seniors).
